Hey ‘whitelake’, the Cash ‘estate’ wasn’t alone in giving material to American Recordings, if indeed they gave anything. If you read the liner notes, you’ll notice that Cash recorded his last four albums with them, and every one of them has the distress signal (upside down American Flag) on them, so if you’re looking to point fingers, point them at Johnny.

If you read Cash:The Autobiography, written by Cash and Patrick Carr,Mr Cash stays clear of politics.Only in later years has his politics been brought up.Even then it has always been by others that talk about Cash’s political leanings. The left has been quick to claim that he is one thiers. But not true,Mr Cash has alway been the observer and then he wrights about it.Part of the power of Mr.Cash’s music is the story behind it.He does not judge the actor in the story he just tells the story and let people make up there own mind about the issue.I think Mr. Cash know that to much politics cheapens the art and takes the focus off of the real story and the power behind that story and the power of that story to change how a person might think. If you look at all of the nonsense around the Dixie Chicks was caused by a statement not a song.I guess they don’t have the insight that Mr Cash has to tell a powerful story in a song that would touch people so much more then an off the cuff dumb ass statement that she made. The Dixie Chicks will long be forgotten in a few years and people will still be studying and discussing the impact and meaning of Mr.Cash’s music and the power of his voice.I have been a Cash fan since the late 70’s when I was in junior high and saw him on TV and have been a fan from then on.
I have not heard Unearhted yet because I hope it will be one of my Christmas gifts if not then I will buy it.Then I will be able to listen and make up my mind what I think. All of Mr. Cash catalog should be listen too and comment on thats the way,I think Mr Cash would have liked it.I would also recommend The Johnny Cash Reader another interesting look at his career.
Oh,by the way the reason that Mr Cash recorded for American was not because of politics. It was because Rubin was going to let Mr Cash record the way he wanted to record.Even the long desire to reocrd a religious album of Mr Cash mother’s favorite relgious songs was fulfilled by Mr Rubin.I think it is the last CD in the Unearthed box set,if the reviews I have read are correct. Also,Mr Cash is so much more then his American recording. They are great no doubt. But,Mr Cash has recorded since the Mid 50s.Give your self a treat listen to them all.

but given that it’s there, why not share with a friend who may not realize the amazing talent that Cash was? I’ve got one friend who I’m planning on giving Disc 5 to once I get the box set.

Great set, but they seemed to have forgotten “(Doing It) Our Way”. Cash recorded a great version of the theme to Laverne & Shirley in the late nineties for a Nissan car commercial.

This box set has it’s share of snippets and studio chatter– so even if only one one verse was recorded (for commercials this is often the case) it could have been included on this set and not looked out of place.

This whole collection is amazing. I just can’t believe some of the half-wit wanna-be music critics on this thread. Anything less than five stars is just plain nuts.
